Abstract

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is one of the most demanding fuels because of implementation of stricter air pollution regulations and emission control norms. LNG fuel is the best alternative fuel to diesel for long haul application due to its high mass and volumetric energy density. The paper looks at the challenges surrounding LNG fuel system design. Rollover & Boil-off gas related phenomenon have been presented in the details and Vent pipe is designed considering all failure issues. A concept has been proposed that the separated type heat pipe technology could be employed to utilize the available cold energy of LNG fuel for automotive cabin air-conditioning. Exemplary design of LNG fuel system is presented and discussed from the mechanical and thermodynamic points of view.
